March Meeting: Respecting Authority
After introductions, Sgt. Smith showed us a safety video that included stranger danger and using the buddy system. He spoke to the girls about not being afraid of officers and even allowed them to ask questions about what would land someone in jail. Then he took us on a tour of the entire facility. First up, the lock-up:
Jail Cell |
More than a few girls were disappointed that there weren't any "real" criminals present today. (Sgt. Smith ensured us all that they had taken them downtown before our arrival.)
Inmates |
There was A LOT of fascination with toilet and sink.
Reason #1001 not to go to jail |
On to the Interrogation Room. Sgt. Smith explained how they talk to the accused here and try to get them to confess what they did. The general consensus among the parents was that all they needed to do was put an accused criminal in the room with these 20 girls and they would confess to anything. :)
A Daisy interrogation |
Next, we moved into the garage and we were shown how and why they use Taser Guns, including their mock criminal to practice on.
Taser Demo - do not try this at home |
And if you try it, aim below the waist |
Then out doors for the girls to try on the Kevlar vest and riot gear. Wow, they are really heavy items that officers wear and perform their jobs in.
SWAT team |
Not so serious SWAT team |
Back inside, they got to see the fingerprint machine. Gone are the days of ink pads and black fingers. Today, it's all electronic.
Electronic finger printing |
Then we all went downstairs to the evidence room. The girls learned how it is all collected, catalogued and filed.
A lesson in evidence |
Evidence lockers |
We ended the day with a very big THANK YOU to Sgt. Smith and his entire team and then he was able to award them their petal.
